You've Got 4 Days to Save Your Facebook Content!

by Dave Maloney
facebook shredding reviews and discussionsIn case you were feeling you had everything online under control for the moment, the guys at Facebook don't want you to get bored. There are more changes on the way intended to improve the users' experience with FB fan pages, and you may want to take a look at your business page before the end of this month.

On October 31, 2011, your Facebook "Reviews" and "Discussions" tabs will disappear from your page forever, (or at least until the next round of changes). Facebook explains their reason behind the change as "the best way to encourage conversation and feedback is through posts and comments on your Wall." The intention is that all relevant information about your business is all in one place for your visitors, and other content that they may be interested in (any noteworthy reviews about the company or discussions) won't get lost on another screen.

So, does your Facebook business page have content under the Discussions tab or any customer reviews under the Reviews tab? If you do, and you don't want to lose it forever, you need to copy it and save it to your computer before Monday! There is no automatic mechanism offered for this; you have to do it yourself, just copy/paste it to a Word document or text file. If you consider some or all of this content worth keeping, you can paste it back to your wall where you see fit.

Just how important is this content to you?

All the content you have on Facebook is actually Facebook's; you don't own it there. You could lose it or it can disappear at anytime! While you definitely need to have compelling content on social media sites to get found, the goal should be to be driving visitors back to your business' website. Any really great content you have accumulated should be on your website where it's yours: where you own it, you control it, and you're not just renting space for it.

(And for those of you who think your business doesn't need to have a website at all, because a Facebook business page is "just as good" and doesn't cost anything, we'll yell at you another time!)

Unfortunately we weren't aware of this change and we've lost our Reviews. Is there a way we can see an archived version of our Facebook page so we can 'find' our lost Reviews?

Any help gratefully received!

Hi Peter,
You're in luck...try Googling "peter sommer travels facebook reviews" and the first page that comes up is probably the "lost" page. Now, don't click on the listing itself - click on the grey arrow to the right of the page listing that displays the Google preview of the page. At the top of the little preview is a link that reads "Cached;" this will take you to Google's cached version of this page the last time that it was crawled and indexed. Then you'll be able to copy your content and save it, good luck!
