RIP Steve: Why I'm a Crazy Apple Fan

by Linda Sevier
I’m sure you have read about those “crazy Apple fans”.  Well, I can say with all honesty that I have been one since 1985.  Why?  Because Steve really changed my life for the better. I don’t believe that I would be the person I am today professionally without Apple’s products and Steve’s inspiration.  It has been an incredible ride!

appleI bought my first Mac in 1985 and lugged it back and forth to my job at an ERP software company in Silicon Valley every day.  Why?  In those days you got what IT wanted they wanted you to have, when they wanted you to have it. Most tools were home grown and you often had very little to work with.  I was managing a large software migration project.  There was no project management software.  Then the MAC came along and MAC Project.  It was the beginning of a love affair. I was unshackled and finally had a tool that just let me get my job done.  It was easy to use and the quality of what I could produce was far beyond the norm.  Using Apple products made me more productive and allowed me to be creative.

As the owner of a marketing company, I have been in awe of Steve for years.  I was lucky enough to see Steve announce new products such as the ipod, and the iphone at MacWorld several times.  It was magical!.  Entering the room at the Moscone the first time, I didn’t know what to expect.  In the early days, it was a small crowd that got in usually after waiting in line all night and it was not streamed or broadcast. The presentation was flawless, the product fabulous.  Then I exited the hall... the world had literally changed!  The Moscone and the area around it was covered with product ads, the Apple booth open, the product on display, and a host of Apple folks ready to show it off, let you play with it, and answer questions.  I can’t express it any better than saying it was like Christmas morning every time.  Apple was marketing their new products by keeping them a secret.  How awesome is that!?  Steve and company seriously rewrote the book. Of course you have to have some insanely great products to pull that off.

The biggest take away from Steve, and I try to keep in mind every day in my business, is that it is the customer experience that really matters.  Just deliver the best you can for your customers and make them shine.  The rest will come.

So, rest in peace, Steve.  Thanks for the insanely great products and the inspiration. You will be sorely missed.
