Have You Done Any Link Building?

by Dave Maloney
man with sign reading Im an expert in xyz services based on how many referrals I have from link buildingWe've mentioned previously that 75% of a page of your website's Search Engine Optimization (SEO) results from "off-page," or Inbound Links from other sources online. Having the right keywords on your page is not enough; you need to be Link Building!  Link building is the exercise of getting inbound links from another website to your webpages, which not only gives you more chances of getting found through these referring links, but also boosts your rankings in search engines!

Inbound links are online recommendations, and like any other form of business networking, the more recommendations and referrals you can get, the better for your company's reputation. Similarly, link building builds your online reputation; for example, your business is about "XYZ services." If, through your link building efforts, you were able to gather 100 inbound links to your site from a hundred other websites, (regardless of whether or not any of these sites had anything to do with "XYZ services") Google will take notice. Your site will rank higher in search results for "XYZ Services" than your competitors - whose pages may be just as well optimized as yours, but don't have as many recommendations as you.

link building online is like businessmen being introduced by referral

And just like business referrals, some links are more valuable than others, specifically in eyes of Google. One link from a very powerful and high-ranking site, say "www.thegodsofxyz.com," would have much more significance to your SEO than those other hundred links from less-relevant sites. After getting a recommendation from such a trusted and reputable authority, Google would see you as a very credible expert on the subject of XYZ services; and your site gains "power" from that, consequently ranking much higher than your competitors who may have more links than you, but not one that "good".

Where do you begin with your link building? You've heard this one before: your content! You want to build your credibility online, become an "authority" on your subject? Let everyone know you're an expert in "XYZ" by showing off your intelligence and unique point of view on the subject - create content that people will be interested in and will want to link to. (Another reason why you shouldn't be putting off that blog any longer!)

Is all your content well optimized, and are you getting good quality traffic who are interested in the kind of "xyz services" you provide?  If you are measuring your website traffic with tools like Google Analytics or HubSpot, you'll be able to see how many referring links you have to your site and how valuable they are to your SEO performance. Now to get more...next, we'll talk about your link building strategy.
