Behold The Power of Inbound Links!
by Dave Maloney
When you think of search engine marketing (SEO), you usually think of getting found in Google based on what keyword phrases you have on your webpage. In reality, SEO is divided into 2 parts: "on-page" which is all about the "Relevance" of your page is in search results based on what keywords are placed where on the page, and the bigger half, "off-page" which measures your page's "Authority" by how many inbound links go to your page. And by "bigger half," they say your inbound links account for around 75% of your SEO efforts... so probably worth looking into!
One Inbound Link Doubled our Traffic
Here's a recent example of what just one inbound link to your site is capable of: About 3 weeks ago, HubSpot posted a blog entitled "21 Awesome Inbound Marketing Blogs You Should Be Reading",
in which Pagetender's Internet Marketing Blog was included with a link to our blog (Thanks, HubSpot!) We found out about the new link during our routine look over our website Traffic Sources report, one of the many indispensable tools that's built into our HubSpot portal. In summary, the report displays how much traffic came to our website within any specific date range, and can tell us where that traffic came from.
Under the "Referrals" category, (inbound links) the report showed the number of visitors to our site "referred" to our site from an external source was double in August of what was recorded in previous months. The number of incoming visits to the site from the RSS feed of our blog also showed what you could call a "spike." The report can be fine tuned down to a daily view showing the spikes within 1-2 days of the date HubSpot's blog post went live, and lists the referring sites and actual counts of how many visitors came to our site through those each of those inbound links.
Another handy HubSpot tool which analyzes our blog traffic and subscribers displayed a similar trend of increased subscription numbers coinciding with the dates around that one new inbound link. Hard to believe, the increase was more than double the previous total! (The numbers in parenthesis indicate when articles were posted, not totals)
The point of all this wasn't to brag, but just to quickly demonstrate how valuable inbound links are to your online presence; and also to thank all of you for reading and following, your comments and links - thanks!
Now, if that many new people found your company was just one link, imagine what 10 inbound links would do for your online business...or 100 inbound links!? How do you get them you might ask? And did you know that not all links are created equal? "Stay tuned for all this and more" in upcoming posts about link building and link building strategies!
