Add a Google Plus One (+1) Button
by Dave Maloney
"Google +1" (pronounced Google Plus One), a new feature from Google, offers to make search results even more helpful by displaying personal recommendations adjacent to each listing. It works exactly like Facebook's already popular "Like" button, except instead of "Liking" a page's product or service, you can "plus one" it. For businesses who see a lot more traffic coming to their website from Google (the world's largest search engine!) than from Facebook, this is worth looking into!
This video gives a quick explanation of how Google Plus One works:
When a potential customer is signed into Google and doing a search, each result listed will have a Plus One button next to it and below the page's description, they'll be able to see how may "+1's" the page has to date.
Just like Facebook, they'll be able to see who in their circle of friends and contacts has recommended this page with a "+1." Having a few recommendations next to your business' name can't hurt, and traffic to your site that came because they saw recommendations from people they know and trust is good traffic to have.
If you're able to edit your website, adding a Google Plus One Button on a page of your site is easy. You can add the Plus One Button anywhere on a page you'd like for best visibility, and you can add it to any and all pages on your site. You can have more than one +1 buttons per page, if you list several products or services. Google's Plus 1 Button Tool gives you a few design/size options and a couple little pieces of code to paste within your page.
If your site is on HubSpot, simply paste the header tag under "Page Properties/Show Advanced Options/ Add HTML Head tag Text." For other content management systems, the header code gets pasted at the bottom of your page's HTML code right before the close body tag. Another HubSpot note, you have to use a "Plain HTML" module instaed of an "Add Content" module for the +1 button to display on your page.
Lastly, just like Facebook, to start "Plus-One-ing" you have to be signed into Google. Chances are you already have a Gmail or Google Analytics account; and of course, if you don't, Google will be happy to add you!
