Start a Blog This Winter!

commuting in a snowstorm

by Dave Maloney
I'm sure there may be someone out there who wouldn't agree, but as I sat in traffic half the morning yesterday I concluded that Winter has officially been here too long. The days are too short, it's too cold to go outside and there's nothing to do anyway with 4 feet of snow everywhere. If your only options are to stare at the TV guide channel or repaint the dining room, maybe now would be the perfect time to start blogging!

Your website is getting traffic, but you know it could do better if you could start a blog. The biggest and most important part of showing up higher in search engines is by creating more content: more content leads to more pages on your site which leads to more traffic and more links to your site, which means more power/higher rankings to you. The far most effective way to get this ball rolling is to start a blog; churn out some unique content that others will want to link to, hook it up to your social media pages and let the word spread.

It's the beginning of a new year, maybe your busy season hasn't kicked in yet. Blogging can give your business some incredible results without having to worry about your marketing budget. According to HubSpot, sites that start a blog:

  • have 434% more indexed pages than sites without a blog
  • have 55% more traffic than sites without a blog
  • have 97% more inbound links than sites without a blog!

Right now if you've got nothing better to do, you might as well give it a try and start blogging!

Another great idea to consider is creating a blogging calendar; sit down and brainstorm about a future list of blog topics; this would also help you arrange them to post in a logical sequence for your audience. Half the battle for me is coming up with the next topic to talk about; but knowing a subject ahead of time can make my commute a lot more productive than just an hour of pressing radio buttons!
