Page Title Mistakes and Misunderstandings
by Dave Maloney
Your web page title is one of the most crucial pieces of your SEO puzzle: It is the first thing that is displayed in search results telling the world (human searchers and search engines) what your page is about, and serves as the "Inbound Link" to your page. With that much accountability falling on your page titles, they should be thought about pretty carefully!

Things to Avoid When Creating a Page Title
- Not Having One! If you don't add a page title, your webpage software may default to displaying "Untitled Document" and there's really no need to explain why you don't want that, right?
- The Perfect Length Google allows 70 characters to be displayed in its search engine results page. Make the most of it and incorporate the most important keywords in your page. Place these keywords in the beginning so it will be easily captured by search engine robots.
- The Mortal Sin of Keyword Stuffing Keywords are the delicacies of search engine robots, but if you flood your title with tons of it then it will suffer unwanted high bounce rates. It will not produce relevant page ranking because the searcher will quickly trash it, because it is impertinent to his search.
- Use of Company/Site Name You don't really need to use the company, business or site name on the title page of your web pages, unless maybe the "Contact" or "About" Page. Search engines will easily recognize the name of your company because of the copyright notice that you have placed in the footer of your website.
- Duplicate Web Page Titles Be certain that your titles are unique; each page is a chance to rank for a different keyword phrase, why waste that? (This kind of goes along with why you shouldn't use your compnay name in all of them also.)
Features of a Good SEO Title
- It has to be unique.
- It has to flow logically.
- It has to be in relation to the contents of the page discussed.
- It has to contain the most important keyword phrase relative to the web page.
Bear this points in mind and avoid the above mentioned mistakes in creating your page title and you will soon see how it will help increase your page rankings!
